Gearing Up for the Florida Winter Horse Show Circuit

Gearing Up for the Florida Winter Horse Show Circuit

Florida’s winter show season signals a new start for riders. The air is crisp, the mornings come early, and the excitement feels electric–whether at the massive horse shows in Wellington and Ocala, or the smaller venues around the state.

At JODS, we know that preparation goes beyond training. Looking polished, feeling comfortable, and dressing for Florida’s unique conditions set the tone for a successful season. Whether you’re competing or watching from the stands, we’ll help you gear up for the months ahead with apparel that performs in the ring and looks right at home on the showgrounds.

Florida’s Winter Horse Show Circuit: Where the Season Begins

From December through March, Florida becomes the center of the equestrian world. Riders from across the country, and often across the globe, head south for perfect weather and top-level competition. The Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington anchors the season, joined by venues like the World Equestrian Center (WEC) in Ocala, HITS Ocala, and TerraNova Equestrian Center near Sarasota. Together, they create a circuit that blends competition, community, and lifestyle.

The atmosphere is both serious and social. Early-morning schooling rounds give way to grand prix nights under the lights, where trainers, riders, and spectators mingle. It’s where careers are made, and the latest in riding apparel and equipment takes center stage.

What It’s Like at WEF

The Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) is the heart of the Florida horse show winter circuit. Held from January through March, the Winter Equestrian Festival features 13 consecutive weeks of international show jumping as well as top-level hunters hosted at Wellington International’s world-class facility. Every week features multiple rings running from sunrise to evening, with classes for all levels: from short-stirrup ponies to Olympic riders.

For first-timers, the scale of WEF can be surprising and maybe a little intimidating. The grounds stretch across hundreds of acres with permanent barns, warm-up arenas, and a bustling vendor village filled with some of the biggest brands in the equestrian world. Grand prix nights draw crowds under the lights, where the best in the world compete at the highest level.

Winter Wardrobe Essentials for WEF

Florida weather can be unpredictable. Morning temperatures often start in the 50s, afternoons can climb into the 90s, and occasional brief showers often leave the air noticeably more humid. Dressing smart means choosing layers that breathe and stretch while protecting you from both sun and rain.

With that in mind, below are pieces every rider and spectator should consider packing for the winter circuit.

Rider Must-haves

Sunshirts

The Florida sun can be brutal, and it’s not always convenient to reapply sunscreen. As counter-intuitive as it sounds, mocknecks have been a huge trend in the equestrian world. We love the Equisite Alesia perforated mockneck for its lightweight, breathable fabric, and multitude of colors. The For Horses Isa is another great choice for sun protection with an added touch of sparkle. For a more traditional look, the Tailored Sportsman sunshirts in long sleeve, short sleeve, and sleeveless offer a quarter zip neckline for the option to zip up or down.

Show Shirts

Both long sleeves and short sleeves are widely worn in the hunter and jumper rings. The proliferation of faux cuffs on show coats (such as the RJ Classics Monterey), have made short sleeves a great option for the hot weather while maintaining a traditional look.  Look for pieces made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics with built-in UV protection. The Essex Luna Show Shirt is a great classic option, with a crisp, traditional collar, while the 70 degrees lace show shirt is a modern take on show shirt, with super lightweight, breathable fabric, a perforated back, and flirty lace sleeves.

Hunt Coats

A well-cut coat gives structure to your turnout and helps you look ring-ready. The For Horses Cristina Show Coat combines stretch fabric with a tailored silhouette that moves easily through every fence. For warmer weeks, the RJ Classics Harmony Evo Show Coat is  offers lightweight mesh construction and clean lines, with great modern elements like a number-string pass through, and faux cuffs.

Breeches and Jodhpurs

Choose breeches in breathable, high-stretch fabric that holds shape and resists staining. Choose tan breeches for hunters and jumpers, with white breeches reserved for formal jumper classes. For schooling, colored breeches are preferred. We love the For Horses Ennie breeches for both showing and schooling, with a wide variety of colors offered. Younger riders should stick with jodhpurs and paddock boots, especially while riding ponies. Some great options for children are the Tailored Sportsman Tech Jodhpurs or RJ Classics Collette Jodhpurs, both designed for comfort and freedom of movement.

Helmets

A proper helmet protects your head and refines your overall look. Matte finishes are preferred in the hunter and equitation rings, while jumpers can opt for bolder designs. The Samshield Miss Shield Premium Helmet offers a wide brim for sun protection without losing the quiet polish judges expect, making it an excellent choice for hunters and equitation. Choose one of our many custom designs for a statement piece in the jumper ring, such as the Miss Shield glossy with crystal fabric top helmet. Proper fit is key for a helmet–make sure to be fitted in person and look for a snug fit with even pressure all around your head. The helmet should sit low, just above the eyebrows, and remain stable as you ride.

Outerwear

Keep a lightweight layer or vest in your tack trunk or backpack for unpredictable weather. Look for waterproof materials that layer easily over your show shirt or coat in case of rain. The Helly Hansen crew raincoat is a rider favorite.

Rider Tip: Florida weather changes fast. Pack for cool mornings, hot afternoons, and the occasional downpour. A spare shirt and waterproof jacket are worth the extra luggage space.

Spectator Style

Spectators form an essential part of Florida’s show circuit culture. You might spend hours watching from shaded stands, walking vendor lanes, or attending evening events. Although comfort is a must, you don’t have to sacrifice style to feel at ease.

Sporty, equestrian-inspired athletic outfits are popular for spectators as well as riders. The Tailored Sportsman long sleeve sunshirt will keep the hot Florida sun off of your skin while keeping you cool. Many modern breeches have a legging-like feel and are a popular choice for non-riders. The Tailored sportsman tech breeches have a traditional tan knee patch that gives equestrian-chic vibe for riders and on-riders alike. A wide-brimmed hat or visor provides shade during daytime events, while a stylish raincoat keeps you prepared for afternoon storms.

JODS offers apparel that transitions easily from watching rounds to attending evening dinners on the grounds. You’ll find performance shirts, outerwear, and sweaters that work well in Florida’s climate while staying true to classic equestrian style.

Lightweight Layers

Layering clothing, like a light sweater or vest over a breathable sunshirt, transitions well through the day. You can always take a layer off if the heat gets to be too much. Linen trousers, jeans, or breeches allow freedom of movement while maintaining structure.

Footwear for the Grounds

Show venues are mostly grass, sand, or dirt paths. For this reason, closed-toe shoes or low-heeled boots are best. Avoid open sandals or delicate shoes that may collect dust or slip on wet surfaces.

Rain and Sun Protection

Keep a waterproof raincoat in your tote bag for passing storms. Umbrellas are discouraged near the ring, as they can startle horses. Instead, opt for a hooded raincoat or waxed hat that will keep you dry without drawing attention. For sunny days, a wide-brimmed hat or logo hat offers shade and style.

Smart Accessories

Neutral-colored belts, scarves, and sunglasses pull an outfit together without overpowering it. A crossbody bag keeps essentials close while leaving hands free. Choose natural fabrics that breathe well, especially when walking through the Vendor Village or sitting in open seating areas.

Spectator Tip: Dress with respect for the riders and horses. Avoid noisy fabrics or reflective accessories that could distract competitors in the ring.

That experience shapes every product we carry and every recommendation we make.
