About the Hampton Classic Horse Show
Hampton Classic has deep roots in the Hamptons’ equestrian tradition. First taking shape in the early 1920s, it evolved through decades of revivals and reinvention as the sport (and the region) grew around it.
What most riders recognize as the modern Hampton Classic truly began its rise in 1976, when the show expanded into a major-rated event and started building the reputation it’s known for today.
A few years later, in 1982, the competition moved to its current home on Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton, establishing the iconic showgrounds experience that now feels synonymous with “Hampton Classic week.”
The Bridgehampton Showgrounds Experience
Today, the show calls Bridgehampton home, held at 240 Snake Hollow Road. It’s expansive in the best way, built for full days that start early, run long, and stay lively.
Multiple rings hum at once, the schedule keeps moving, and the grounds fill with that familiar show-week rhythm: boots on gravel, announcers in the distance, and spectators floating from ringside to the vendor tents.
In 2025, the Hampton Classic celebrated its 50th anniversary, solidifying its place as a true end-of-summer staple.
World-Class Sport, Hamptons Social Energy
At its core, the Hampton Classic is a serious week of sport, with a schedule that’s packed from start to finish. Expect:
-
FEI-rated show jumping, including 5★ and 2★ divisions
-
Top-tier hunter and jumper competition across levels, from developing riders to elite combinations
-
Multiple rings and divisions running at once, so there’s always something worth watching
Show Culture & Social Scene
And that’s what makes the Hampton Classic so special: yes, it's a serious sport, but it’s also unmistakably a summer social event. The showgrounds feel like their own little world, with:
-
Boutique shopping and vendor tents that tempt even the “I’m just looking” crowd
-
Dining and casual bites for long ringside days
-
Family-friendly activities, including options designed for kids
-
A ringside scene where breeches-and-boots chic mixes with polished Hamptons dressing, especially near VIP areas
In other words, the Hampton Classic isn’t just a horse show you attend. It’s a week where competition, celebrities, community, and style all share the spotlight.

What To Wear at Hampton Classic Horse Show: The JODS Style Guide
For Riders
-
Show Ring Ready
Classic hunter and jumper turnout looks timeless and photographs well. Check the schedule ahead of time, as there are multiple hunter classics, where a shadbelly is the preferred jacket. We recommend the RJ Classics Oakland for its unstructured, lightweight feel.
For jumper riders, white breeches are needed for classic days. Our favorites are the Equiline Ernaek or for a touch of sparkle–the Samshield Clara breeches.
-
Warm-Ups, Barn & Schooling
This is where you spend most of your time. Focus on breathable pieces that still look put-together:
-
Lightweight breeches–we love the stretch offered by For Horses breeches
-
Long sleeve sunshirts or mocknecks, like the 70 degrees mocknecks, or Tailored Sportsman sunshirts.
-
Cashmere sweaters for early mornings
For Spectators & Guests
-
“Hamptons Casual” Chic
Hampton Classic describes itself as a casual daytime outdoor event, and the style reflects that. Aim for relaxed and intentional:
-
Tailored pants, breeches, or polished denim
-
Smart boots, fashion sneakers, or walkable flats
-
Lightweight jacket or vest with an equestrian feel
-
A lightweight sunshirt for daytime
-
A sundress with flats and a hat
-
A cashmere sweater for later in the day
For an easy equestrian touch, try an elbow-patch sweater. It reads classic without feeling costume.
You’ll see a range of looks across the grounds. Some guests opt for a casual look in shorts and sneakers. Others dress up for VIP tents. Both feel right.
-
Elevated Social Style (VIP, Boutique Garden, Grand Prix Sunday)
Grand Prix day often brings a more polished look. Keep it clean and comfortable:
-
An elevated but comfortable sundress
-
Lightweight jacket or sweater for cooler weather
-
Sunglasses and a great belt
-
A sunhat if you love the look
-
Shoes you can walk in comfortably
-
Practical Advice You’ll Be Glad You Took
Skip narrow heels since much of the showgrounds is grass and gravel. Plan for limited shade with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. And if you want a smoother day, arrive mid-morning so you can catch key classes and browse the shops before the afternoon crowds roll in.
Featured JODS Collection for Hampton Classic Horse Show
Hampton Classic week calls for a wardrobe that can keep up. Our Hampton Classic Collection is curated with that exact pace in mind, pairing competition-ready essentials with spectator pieces that feel just as right after the last class as they do ringside. Think of it as your show-week edit: polished, practical, and easy to build outfits from without overpacking or overthinking.
One of the best parts of shopping this time of year is the timing. Hampton Classic often coincides with new fall deliveries, which means you can be among the first to see fresh arrivals from TKEQ, Hannah Childs, and Equiline.
