About the Maryland Horse and Pony Show

Each September, the Prince George’s Equestrian Center comes alive as riders, ponies, and horses arrive for one of the most anticipated stops on the Mid-Atlantic fall circuit.

The Maryland Horse and Pony Show is an A-rated USEF National competition and a designated World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) event. For riders, it’s the perfect opportunity to show indoors before major year-end events such as the Capital Challenge and the Washington International Horse Show. Held at the same venue as those finals, the Maryland Horse and Pony Show often serves as an informal “dress rehearsal” for riders preparing for the indoor season.

The same mindset carries through to turnout and apparel as fall pieces begin to move into regular rotation. Long days, changing temperatures, and the demands of the show ring put riding apparel to the test. Layers, show coats, and technical fabrics are worn hard across long days, making it incredibly important to choose pieces that deliver both polish and performance.

What to Expect

Divisions and Competition

The rings stay busy and bustling throughout the week. Pony sections, children’s hunters, and equitation classes rotate in and out, with little downtime between divisions. Some barns bring large strings, so familiar names and ponies reappear on the schedule.

Championship sections and classic classes are worked into the program, especially on the hunter and equitation side. Those rounds tend to draw a crowd at the rail. Trainers watch closely, and the judging reflects the expectations riders will encounter later in the indoor season.

Atmosphere and Setting

The Maryland Horse and Pony Show offers a unique balance of high-stakes competition and community spirit. Because the show draws top professionals, juniors, and amateurs from across the East Coast, the environment feels active and purposeful from the first hack at dawn to the final round of the evening.

As a WCHR (World Championship Hunter Rider) recognized event, the stakes are high for those chasing national points. You’ll see trainers coaching from the rail with intensity, and riders focused on the "indoor transition," yet the atmosphere remains welcoming and supportive.

Competing at the same venue as major indoor finals adds a sense of momentum and excitement. Riders move between the large outdoor rings and the Show Place Arena throughout the week. The change in footing, lighting, and scale mirrors what competitors encounter later in the indoor season.

JODS celebrates this focused, community-oriented environment by supporting riders with equestrian style that stands up to the demands of a championship-caliber show week.

What to Wear at the Maryland Horse and Pony Show: The JODS Style Guide

Early September in Maryland brings warm afternoons, cooler mornings, and the occasional shower. It’s also during this period that summer pieces begin to be replaced with fall and indoor competition essentials.

Riders typically approach this show as the start of their fall reset. Darker show coats come back into rotation, mid-weight layers replace summer pieces, and weather-ready outerwear becomes part of daily preparation. Riders rely on layers that can be added or removed throughout the day while still presenting a polished look in the ring.
