Upperville Colt & Horse Show

June 1–June 7 | A Timeless Tradition Where Heritage, Competition, and Style Meet

Each June, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show marks the start of summer on the Mid-Atlantic calendar. Horses and riders return to the rolling fields of Upperville, Virginia, where competition unfolds on ground that has hosted the sport for more than a century.

As the oldest horse show in the United States, Upperville holds a special place in American equestrian culture. It attracts amateur and high-level competitors alike, many of whom come from all over the world to showcase their skills under the oaks.

JODS is proud to be part of this event as one of the vendors on the grounds. We’ll be here all week, offering stylish apparel and accessories suitable for this prestigious summer event.

Your Guide to JODS at the 2026 Upperville Colt & Horse Show

Dates: June 1–June 7, 2026

Location: Grafton Farm & Salem Showgrounds, Upperville, Virginia

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show is held each year at the historic Grafton Farm & Salem Showgrounds along John S. Mosby Highway (Route 50) in Upperville, Virginia. It has taken place on these grounds since its founding in 1853, making it one of the few major equestrian events to remain at its original site.

Where to Find Us:

JODS will be on-site with a pop-up boutique on the Salem showgrounds, also known as the Jumper side. We’re located next to Dubarry of Ireland and near Phil’s Grill/Gypsy World Cuisine, a popular gathering spot throughout the day. Our location makes it easy to stop by between classes or while moving between rings.

Duration:

The competition runs throughout the week across multiple rings, with activity centered between the traditional hunter areas at Grafton Farm and the jumper-focused Salem Showgrounds.

Entrance and Parking:

Admission and parking are free all week. Keep in mind that the parking is in open fields. If it’s been raining, the ground can get a little soft, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Accessibility:

There is accessible parking available near the main entrances to make it easier to reach the rings. The grounds also have facilities such as toilets and viewing areas for persons with disabilities.

Where to Sit:

Spectators and riders in between events can relax at picnic tables under shade trees or on the covered bleachers at the Grand Prix Ring. If you're heading to the Hunter rings, seating is a bit more informal. Many people bring their own portable lawn chairs to sit right along the rail under the trees.

About the Upperville Colt & Horse Show

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show was established in 1853 to encourage improved breeding, training, and care of horses. Founded by Colonel Richard Henry Dulany, the event began as a competition where horses were evaluated on quality, movement, and overall presentation.

As equestrian sport developed, Upperville evolved alongside it. The show grew from a regional exhibition into a nationally and internationally recognized competition, attracting riders from amateur divisions through the highest levels of the sport.

Upperville brings together a wide range of classes across hunters, jumpers, equitation, ponies, and breeding divisions. The historical significance of the setting and the scope of competition remain central to the show’s identity.

Family-Friendly Event

Families are a familiar presence at Upperville throughout the week. Pony divisions and leadline classes bring younger riders into the schedule, with sidesaddle competition adding another traditional element. Many barns attend together, and it’s common to see parents, trainers, and siblings gathered along the rail during the day.

Dogs are also welcome on the grounds, provided they are leashed, vaccinated, and watched by their owners.

JODS on the Grounds at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show

The JODS pop-up boutique is designed for easy, in-person shopping during a busy show week. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see pieces up close, try things on, and pick up essentials without leaving the showgrounds.

Our Upperville collection reflects the pace and conditions of a full show week in the Virginia summer heat. Expect lightweight show layers, breathable shirts, summer-ready riding pieces, and classic staples that work for both the ring and long days between classes.

Our friendly team will be there all week, so don’t hesitate to stop by and explore our selection. We’re also happy to answer any styling questions and assist with choosing the right pieces for your needs.

The JODS Style Guide: What to Wear at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show

Upperville is steeped in history and tradition, and riders are expected to dress accordingly. At the same time, riders must account for the heat and humidity of a Virginia summer when planning their outfits.

Show-week wardrobes tend to feature breathable materials and lighter construction. Riders typically opt for classic pieces that stretch but can hold their shape, even after a long day on the grounds.

For Showing Riders

Some classes at Upperville draw more eyes, especially those with junior riders and families. Outfit planning for these divisions tends to start earlier, since popular pieces and sizes can sell out quickly once the week begins.

Leadline and Family Classes

Upperville’s leadline divisions draw a lot of attention, and families often plan outfits ahead of time. If you’re shopping for leadline, we recommend starting with Tailored Sportsman Tech and  Claudia Anderson  jodhpurs, as well as the Belle and Bow Featherweight Jacket.

These deliver a polished look and comfortable feel for summer showing. We also carry handmade hair bows in person at the pop-up, with one-of-a-kind styles you can choose from on-site.

Upperville includes a family class, where riders enter the ring together for a flat class. Many participants coordinate colors or silhouettes so the group looks pulled together in the ring, which makes it worth thinking through outfits before the week gets busy.

Premier Jumper Classes

Upperville’s top tier  jumper classes are a great opportunity to express your style with unique show coat colors or piping.

For instance, the For Horses Cristina Show Coat with contrast collar is a fashionable option for riders who want something classic with a bit of distinction. Sparkly helmets, such as those by Samshield, are another way to add personality to your look without stepping outside accepted show-ring standards.

For Spectators and Guests

Upperville has a social side, and spectator style varies widely. You’ll see everything from summer dresses and tailored outfits to casual shorts and sneakers.

At JODS, we always recommend dressing for the conditions. June weather in Virginia is typically warm and humid, so lightweight fabrics and sun protection are a must.

A popular choice for spectators is a balanced, preppy and practical look. Think sundresses, linen trousers, and sunshirts.

Hats are a long-standing Upperville tradition, especially on the weekend. In fact, there is an official Hat Contest held on the final Sunday during the Grand Prix.

The 1853 Club and VIP Areas

If you’re heading to the VIP areas for the Grand Prix, plan for a slightly more polished look than the rest of the grounds. Structured summer dresses with a stylish hat is a popular look.. The goal is to look stylish but still feel comfortable for a long afternoon outdoors.

Comfortable and stable footwear is especially important. Even in VIP areas, you’ll be standing and walking on grass. Wedges, block heels, loafers, or flats are better options than stilettos, which will sink into the turf.
