How To Shorten Your Belt for a Perfect Fit

Few things are more distracting than settling into the saddle and feeling the excess tail of a belt that’s just a bit too long. Maybe you've lost weight, or your belt has stretched out over time. Or, you purchased the wrong size belt. Did you know that most Tailored Sportman and LILO Equestrian belts are designed to be shortened? Because they use Chicago screws to attach the belt buckles, these belts are easy to shorten at home.

The DIY Guide to Shortening Your Leather Belt

For riders comfortable with hands-on adjustments, shortening at home can be an option.

  1. Measure: Try the belt on through your belt loops. Pulling the belt snugly to your designed tightness, and measure how many inches you need to shorten the belt.

  2. Remove the Buckle: Unscrew the belt buckle from the  Detach the leather carefully. Use sharp leather shears or a fresh utility blade to ensure a clean edge.

  3. Mark the belt: Using your measurement from step 1, measure and mark the belt with how much you will remove
  4. .Carefully cut the belt with sharp scissors.
  5. Punch New Holes: Use a rotary leather punch to recreate the buckle hole accurately. Match the size and alignment of the existing holes for consistency.

  6. Replace the buckle and keeper, and rescrew the buckle on.
