The Show Coat Guide: How to Choose the Right Competition Jacket
Ten minutes before her class, a rider walked into our store in a coat she couldn't show in. Visibly too short, creased, puckered all over. She'd accidentally put it in the dryer. She knew she couldn't walk into the ring like that.
We found her an RJ Classics Victory in green that matched her safety vest perfectly. She went from panicking to confident in about ten minutes. That's what the right coat does. It's not just about looking good. It's about feeling ready.
Your equestrian show coat sets the tone before you even pick up the canter. Whether you're shopping for your first competition jacket or replacing one that's seen a few too many seasons, the right coat makes a difference in how you look and feel in the ring.
At JODS, we carry show coats from For Horses and RJ Classics, each with a different approach to fit, fabric and styling. We've been doing this for nearly 20 years, and the right coat is different for everyone. In this guide, we break down our competition jackets by brand so you can find the one that fits your body, your budget, and your ring.
How to Choose the Right Show Coat
Before we get into specific brands and styles, here's what to think about when choosing a competition jacket:
- Fit and construction: Some riders prefer a structured, tailored coat. Others want unconstructed designs that feel more like a technical layer. Do you like a jacket with a classic, polished design or prefer a more modern, athletic feel?
- Fabric weight: Mesh and lightweight coats are essential for summer circuits and riders who run hot. Heavier fabrics are great for traditionalists and riders in moderate climates.
- Sizing options: If you're petite, tall or between sizes, look for brands that offer short, regular and long lengths. If you have broad shoulders, you may need a style with extra stretch.
- Discipline: Equitation riders tend toward the most traditional styling: often preferring three buttons, flap pockets, conservative colors. Hunters have more flexibility with colors, piping, and design, while Jumpers are able to wear bold colors with contrasting collars and sparkle details.
- Care and travel: Nobody wants to steam a coat at 5 a.m. Look for fabrics that pack flat and resist wrinkles.
For Horses Show Coats
For Horses has quickly become one of the most sought-after show coat brands in the hunter/jumper world. We've watched this brand take off in our store over the past few years, and it's easy to see why. Made entirely in Italy, their jackets are as well-loved as their breeches. With technical fabric that is structured but has plenty of stretch, and that signature attention to detail.
The fabric across all For Horses coats is designed for performance: multi-stretch, breathable, quick-drying and UV-protective. They pack flat, travel well and don't need ironing. If you've ever pulled a wrinkled coat out of your garment bag thirty minutes before your class, you'll appreciate this.
Cristina
The Cristina is the flagship. It's a perfect blend of classic and modern styling, with 3 buttons and angled pocket flaps that flatter the form. They have an updated, shorter fit in the front, while maintaining a longer silhouette in the back. JODS carries several pre-selected custom colorways that we love: navy with grey or light blue piping, black with grey or beige piping, brown with beige, deep green with beige, and graphite with dove grey piping. The piping and button details give each version a distinct personality while staying show-ring appropriate.
Black and navy are our best-selling colorways across the board, but brown and deep green have been trending up this year. The beige piping on these colors looks great with tan breeches.
For riders who want something a little more eye-catching, we also carry the Cristina with contrast collars in three different colorways: navy with steel blue collar, black with dove grey collar, and dove grey with black collar. These are perfect options for Jumper riders, or Hunter riders who don't mind standing out from the crowd.
One of the best things about For Horses is their customization program. If none of our pre-selected options are exactly what you're looking for, email us at info@jods.com and we can help you build a custom Cristina with your choice of colors, piping, buttons, and collar. Sizes run XXS through XXL and production time is about 4-5 weeks.
The Cristina is designed to be shorter in the front and longer in the back. It's a great fit for average height riders, those with shorter torsos, or riders who like that shorter European look. Overall, the fit is true to size, with the shoulders running a touch narrow, and the waist being a bit boxy.

RJ Classics Competition Jackets
RJ Classics has been a staple in the American show ring for years, and we've carried them since our founding. There's a reason they keep showing up in our store: consistent sizing, a wide range of styles and price points that make quality competition jackets accessible. Their latest collections use premium imported Italian jersey fabric that's completely unconstructed. No lining, no shoulder pads. That gives you freedom of movement that feels more like wearing a technical layer than a traditional coat.
Across the line, you'll find UPF 50+ sun protection, wrinkle-free fabric, quick-drying properties and eco-friendly construction. RJ Classics also offers extensive sizing including short, regular and long lengths in most styles, which is hard to find in the show coat world.
Monterey 2.0
The Monterey 2.0 is the top of the line. Three-button styling with traditional flap pockets and a hidden interior zipper give it a classic presentation, while detachable white cuffs let you switch between a traditional and modern look. The Monterey also features number-string holes, so you can hide your number string knot under your coat. Available in navy, black and pine green, with steel blue, deep forest and vintage olive available while supplies last. The color and size range is impressive, especially for riders looking beyond the standard navy and black. Sizes run 00 short through 16. The Monterey is roughly equivalent to your dress size, but runs a bit large; if you're between sizes, go down. Regular length works for an average body type. Under 5'2"? You may want a short. Over 5'6"? Consider a long.
$599
Victory 2.0
The Victory 2.0 is a modern, streamlined style from RJ, with four buttons and zipper pockets, and detachable white cuffs. This jacket also features the number-string holes, for a clean, polished show-ring look. This jacket is great for hunters, jumpers, equitation, and even dressage. The Victory has a long, slim fit, making it the best option for tall, slim riders. The long length is quite long. (Fun fact: we sold this coat to Bella Hadid.) Extensive sizing from 0 short through 16. We recommend sizing up in this jacket, and some riders may need a regular in this style who would otherwise wear a long. For example, we commonly find that riders who wear a 2 long Monterey will need a 4 regular in the Victory.

$579
Harmony Evo: Best Lightweight Show Coat for Summer
The Harmony Evo is the evolution of the best-selling Harmony Mesh. The style you know and love, now with removable white sleeve cuffs, back number holes, updated collar trim, a removable lapel pin and new buttons. The lightweight mesh body provides exceptional breathability.
Mesh versus traditional really comes down to personal preference. We see it every season: riders have strong opinions about what they like. In hotter weather, more riders gravitate toward mesh. Even riders who prefer traditional coats will switch to mesh on extreme heat days rather than go without a coat entirely. For newer riders, mesh coats are a great entry point since they're less expensive than most of the other styles on the market.
Sizing runs similar to the Monterey: if you're between sizes, go down. Under 5'2"? Consider a short. Over 5'6"? A long may be your best bet. Available in odyssey grey, oxford blue, khaki green, antique violet, and french roast. Sizes 0 through 16 in short, regular, and long.

$320
Harmony Mesh
The original Harmony Mesh is still available and remains one of the most popular show coats at JODS. Super lightweight, breathable and stretchy, it combines a mesh body with Italian jersey front, zipper pockets and flattering V-shaped back seaming. If you want a no-fuss show coat that breathes in the heat and looks polished in the ring, this is it. Extensive sizing from 00 short through 20.

$199 to $309
Girls Show Coats
For young riders, we carry a selection of girls' competition jackets from both For Horses and RJ Classics, each designed with the same quality and attention to detail as the ladies' coats, sized and fitted for junior riders.
For Horses Cecilia
The Cecilia is the junior version of the Cristina, built for young riders who want the same Italian quality and contrast piping. The kids' fit is shorter and boxier than the ladies' version. Sized from 4/5 through 14/15, with a 14 Plus option. What is the size 14 Plus? This is Italy's version of size 16/17: it is on the same scale as the rest of the jackets, both larger and longer than the 14/15. With extensive customization options available, email us at info@jods.com to custom design your jacket.

$440
RJ Classics Shore
The Shore is a lightweight girls' show coat with detachable cuffs and a slim, longer fit, making it a great choice for taller or leaner junior riders. Like the adult jackets, these also feature number string holes, for a clean, polished look. Available in navy, black and pine. Sizes 10 through 18, with short, regular, and long options.

$459
RJ Classics Harmony Junior (Slim Fit)
The Harmony Junior Slim Fit is the girls' version of the best-selling Harmony mesh. Lightweight, breathable and stretchy with a mesh body and Italian jersey front panel. The slim fit is ideal for leaner riders, with a similar fit to the Shore.

$269
RJ Classics Harmony Junior 2.0 (Relaxed Fit)
The Harmony Junior Relaxed Fit offers the same lightweight mesh construction in a roomier silhouette for riders who need a looser, boxier fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Show Coats
What size show coat should I get?
Show coat sizing varies by brand and style. For Horses uses European sizing (XXS to XXL). The Cristina has narrow shoulders and a shorter front/longer back design; it's true to size but can run a bit generous through the waist. It's great for average to shorter riders, or those who prefer a shorter European styling. RJ Classics uses US numeric sizing (0 to 20) and offers short, regular, and long lengths in most styles. The Monterey and Harmony run normal; size down if you're between sizes. Under 5'2"? You may want a short. Over 5'6"? Consider a long. The Victory runs long and slim, best for taller riders. If you're not sure, email us at info@jods.com with your measurements and we'll help you find the right fit.
Do I need a different show coat for hunters vs jumpers vs equitation?
Jumper classes allow the most flexibility: bold colors, contrasting piping and collars, and crystal accents are acceptable. Hunter riders usually wear more conservative jackets, in colors such as black, navy, grey, green, brown, and french blue, with minimal accents. Equitation riders usually have the most restrictive attire, usually a plain black or navy coat, with minimal embellishment. That said, a well-fitting navy or black coat works beautifully across all three disciplines.
What's the difference between a mesh show coat and a traditional show coat?
Mesh coats (like the Harmony Evo and Harmony Mesh) use a lightweight, perforated, breathable mesh body that allows air to flow through the jackets as you ride. They're designed for hot weather and riders who overheat easily. Traditional coats (like the Cristina and Monterey) use fully technical fabric throughout, providing a more tailored look with less airflow.
Can I customize a For Horses show coat?
Yes. For Horses offers full customization on the Cristina. You choose the jacket color, collar color, piping, buttons and logo finish. JODS carries several pre-selected custom options, but if you want something unique, email info@jods.com and we'll help you design it.
How should I care for my show coat?
Most technical show coats should be machine washed on a cool, gentle cycle. Hang dry. And whatever you do, never put them in the dryer. (Trust us. We've seen what happens when a coat goes through the dryer right before a class. It's not pretty.) The wrinkle-free fabrics used by both For Horses and RJ Classics mean you can fold them flat in your garment bag and they'll be ring-ready when you arrive.
